What is the point of church?

Is it possible we’ve lost the plot when it comes to church? Have we confused the form with the function? How do we know if we’re doing it right? I’ve got a lot of questions and I’d love to hear your thoughts on all this.

How do you know they’re Christians?

A lot of declarations fly around about whether or not so-and-so is “really” a Christian. I mean, if they voted THAT way… If they hang out with THOSE people… if they didn’t go to THIS specific event or speak out against THAT obvious evil…if they posted THAT meme… If they donated to THOSE organizations or…

Am I prayerful enough?

Recently I ran into a friend I’d not seen in months. We smiled, clasped hands, and progressed with the typical salutations of a chance meeting. When I exclaimed that I had been thinking about her so much lately and praying for her, she grew suddenly serious. “Well, that’s no coincidence.” Um, okay. I kind of brushed…

Are we studying the Bible backwards?

It’s possible some of us (many of us) have a backwards approach to Bible study. We’ve been told forever that the Bible is “an instruction manual for life” but — Is it really? I’m not so sure, and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

What if I’ve messed up EVERYTHING?

I’ve not been sleeping. For maybe weeks. Months? I don’t even know. What I do know is that I wake up between 1 and 3am just about every morning and lie awake pondering all the mistakes — or possible mistakes — I’ve made with my life. And how those mistakes…

What does Jesus look like?

Halfway through a mother-son road trip to visit friends and colleges, we sat in a church parking lot in South Carolina. Food trucks lined the edges, serving everything from gourmet burgers and mac-and-cheese to fried pickles, something I’d certainly never had before. I tried them and will only say — my mouth was confused.  We…

Do it like a Christian. Or maybe better.

Are we called to ACT LIKE Christians or are we called to BE Christians?

What’s the difference? Let’s talk about it. And how we might make our faith go deep below the surface.

A Prayer for those Treading Water

Do you have a regular prayer that you repeat over and over? Margaret Feinberg shared in her book Wonderstruck about a time she become so weary in spirit that all she could pray was: God is good.God is on the throne.Breathe in.Breathe out. These were the words she whispered while making snow angels in the…

Are you free? Are you living like it?

Sometimes what we know in our heads doesn’t reach our hearts or our feet. How can we take steps toward truly walking in the freedom Christ came to give us?

If I had a tattoo…

People love to cite the first part of Proverbs 31:25: “She is clothed with strength and dignity…” But the last half of that verse is my favorite. In fact, if I ever get a tattoo, it will either be a black-eyed susan around the birthmark on my back OR it will be the second half…

Can we talk about idolatry?

Any kid who has grown up around Bible stories knows what idolatry is. It’s bowing down to golden statues and carved images and worshipping any deity other than God Almighty. We learned this when Sunday School teachers told us about Moses and The Ten Commandments; about Daniel and Nebuchadnezzar; and then when missionaries shared slideshows…
