First Samuel
Samuel was the last of the Old Testament judges. He was not only a judge, but also a prophet and a priest. And he was the guy God used to anoint and advise Israel’s first monarchies.
This book comes in the middle of the OT historical books, so it’s pretty important that we get some context. The beginning of this study talks about Judges, Ruth, and the oh-so-important Levirate Law from Genesis and Leviticus. Once we cover the necessary question of HOW DID WE GET HERE? then we can dive into the text itself. And we do!
We meet characters like Hannah, Eli, and his sons, then follow Samuel, Saul, and David as they lead the nation, for better or worse, into their own political kingdoms.
What can we learn about God from these dynamic stories? About power, corruption, and holiness? What can we learn about ourselves and society from these very human characters?
