There are over 27 million slaves in the world today. That’s more than ever before in history … and that’s a conservative estimate. Some studies suggest that 29 million is a more accurate number.
I don’t want to think about this; I want to close my eyes and pretend it’s not true, but … change will not come through ignorance. Victims cannot be rescued until those of us with voices speak for them.
I choose to speak.
I’m in it to end it.
Drawing a red ‘x’ on my hand and posting selfies everywhere doesn’t do a whole lot to stop slavery. It’s not a courageous step. It doesn’t make me vulnerable or even ambitious.
It does make people ask a lot of questions, mostly: “What’s up with the X?” And that’s the point. Get people asking questions so that we can answer questions. Education. Awareness. Empowerment.
We need to do more than graffiti ourselves and pepper social media with photos of it. We need to act.

If you’re local, I invite you to join Justice Network. We need more workers. There is so much to do and we need help. We have a lot of ideas and plans for this spring and summer, but we cannot do it all alone. Visit our website to learn more about us, acquire resources and explore events. Our next meeting is on Saturday, March 8th. We’d love to see you there.
