I adore Susan May Warren. She is, hands-down, my favorite contemporary author. I fell in love with her work instantly with the PJ Sugar series. I swooned heavily and repeatedly with the Noble Legacy series. (My husband says going to buy a big belt buckle and a cowboy hat. He thinks it’s a threat. I think it’s a tease.) And every new installment of the Deep Haven series brings late nights, plentiful tears, and a fresh understanding of God’s love for me.
Her latest series — Daughters of Fortune — is different from all these. The historical trilogy follows a lineage of heroines through the Golden Era from Manhattan to Paris, from Montana to Hollywood.
And the third book? Well, Duchess, in my opinion, perfectly completed the series. I loved the intricate tangles between Hollywood and WWII, but, as always, the story hit me personally on a spiritual level.
Rosie, the main character, drives me crazy. I didn’t like her in Baroness and it took some time for me to empathize with her in Duchess. This, however, I believe was intended by the author and necessary for me to see the extent of truth behind the story.
- God is sovereign.
- He can turn devastating trials — even those caused by our own hands — into beautiful things.
- No one is beyond the reach of His love.
Sure, I knew all these things before, but as Rosie struggled to trust God, God highlighted areas in my own life in which I mirror her selfish, prideful choices. I don’t trust easily. I never surrender without a fight.
I think we all have a bit of this heroine in us. We want great things in life! We want to be spectacular! But in chasing those dreams, we cling to our own plans too tightly. We fail to see that God also wants those things for us, and He knows the better way for us to find them. It’s that great paradox:
“For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.” — Matthew 16:25
So, did I like the book? Of course! I definitely recommend it. Many times I’ll reach the end of one of Susan’s books and crave more. This one, however, left me content. Undoubtedly I want more books from her, but she wrapped this series beautifully.
If you’re tempted to read the titles out of order, DON’T. You have to read these books sequentially, starting with Book 1: Heiress.
About the Book:
When her country needs her, will she have the courage to surrender her glittering world and her one true love?
The golden age of Hollywood is in the business of creating stars. Rosie Worth, now starlet Roxy Price, has found everything she’s wanted in the glamour of the silver screen. With adoring fans and a studio-mogul husband, she’s finally silenced the voices-and grief-of the past. Her future shines bright…until the fated Black Friday when it all comes crashing down. When Roxy loses everything, she finds herself disgraced and penniless. Her only hope is to join forces with Belgian duke Rolfe Van Horne, a longtime film investor. But Rolfe is not who he seems, and he has other plans for Roxy and her movies-plans to support a growing unrest in Europe, plans that could break her heart and endanger her life.
