New Year’s Resolutions
I’ve never been big on new year’s resolutions. A year seems like a very long time to test a goal. And why is January 1st the magical day that changes everything? It doesn’t make much sense. If you want to change a habit or set a new goal, why wait until the dead of winter to do it?
That said, I do have a few goals I’d like to share. I tend to be an over-achiever, so I’m trying to keep it simple this year. I hate failing, even if it’s my own standards, so I’m trying to only set goals I believe are realistic and tangible. Here goes.
- Book Review Tuesdays. I have a beautiful Bookshelf on this website, but haven’t been updating it regularly. This is going to change. I posted four new reviews today and hope to post at least one new review each Tuesday. I’ll continue posting at Christian Children’s Book Review, as well. I do 5-10 reviews there each month. (It’s much quicker and easier to review picture books than titles appealing to adults!)
- Maintain a meal plan. I always plan meals before grocery shopping, but I never set the dates for when we will eat what. What’s worse is I don’t keep a list of the recipes I’ve chosen. This results in wasted produce (I forget what is necessary for which meals and use it in something not planned.) and a lovely routine of “What do you feel like eating?” right around 6 o’clock every night. Not exactly wise stewardship of time, food or money. So, this resolution is to keep a calendar of meals, with recipes annotated.
I’ll know exactly what we’re eating each night and whether or not we have the ingredients required.A tangent of this goal includes make-ahead meals (Ala Once a Month Cooking and Don’t Panic — Dinner’s in the Freezer!). I’m not (completely) naive. I know life is never as expected, so I want to stock the freezer at least once a month with ready-to-heat meals for those nights when I won’t have time to cook. - Exercise three times a week. Yes, I know I should already be doing this, but doesn’t running up and down stairs 15 times a day count as exercise? Maybe. This goal refers to premeditated and deliberate exercise. I already do my crunches and such twice a week. (I was doing it every day until I realized that made me useless the next morning when my 30 pound child wanted to be carried everywhere.) So, three times a week is the goal.
- Complete at least 40 books by the end of the year. This year I read 30. I started probably 70, but only finished 30 of them. (ADD strikes again.) My list was pretty balanced; about 50/50 for nonfiction vs. fiction. If I only read fiction, I could knock out about two books a week, but with nonfiction, I have to process everything thoroughly before I can move on. This is why I am still reading Prayer by Philip Yancey. I started it last spring. The man is brilliant, forcing much prickly introspection. I hope to finish this title this year. I’ll not list other specific titles (see my previous post), but I do hope to again maintain an equal balance.
- Continue writing. I want to submit at least ten articles for publication in 2008. I also want to rework my book proposal and begin another one. Finally, I want to get an agent who can shop those proposals for me.
What are your goals for the new year?
RSS Feed Fixed!
If you’ve had difficulties subscribing to my feed through Google Reader or some other service, please try it again. I apologize for the inconvenience. It turns out there was some rogue code redirecting everyone to a different blog. We found it and fixed it, so all should work correctly now. If it doesn’t, please let me know. I want to make sure you all can keep up with the site in the way you like best. Thanks for your patience and thanks for reading!!
Trouble with my feed.
Hey folks! There is currently a problem with my RSS feed. If you subscribe to the site through the link to the right (FeedBlitz), then it probably hasn’t affected you and won’t affect you. Everything is running fine with them — or at least seems to be at the moment. If, however, you subscribe to the feed through another service, you may be redirected to a “Blue Box Blog.” I have no idea what this is, but I’ve contacted blogger regarding the problem. Hopefully we’ll have it fixed soon. Sorry for the inconvenience and THANKS for reading!
High Calling Blogs
What are you reading?
The New Site is Here!
Notice anything different?
The new site is up and running! This blog is just part of it. Feel free to explore the other pages via the menu (found horizontally under the books). I am loving the new look!!! Some pieces are still under construction. Please be patient with me as we make the transition. I’d love to know what you think! If you’ve got suggestions, shoot those my way, too. In the meantime, feel free to haver.
Coming Soon …
… a NEW LOOK to In the Dailies!
I’m actually getting a whole new website and am so excited about it! I couldn’t wait to share it with you. Check it out: CLICK HERE to see the new design. Obviously, it’s not done yet, but you get the idea. I’d love to know what you think!
Now to answer a few questions …
Q: Do I have to learn a new address?
A: Nope. Not unless you want to. You will still be able to find me at the same address you’ve always used: www.inthedailies.blogspot.com. But you will also be able to access my blog through the main site. I’ll give you that address once it’s up and running.
Q: Will this affect my subscription?
A: Not at all. You will continue to get the same email updates like always.
Q: Why the new site?
A: With my writers conference just five weeks away, I’m doing a lot to prepare. One of those things is to professionalize my package. A personal trainer wasn’t in the budget, so I decided to get a new website. The new site will be brighter and more welcoming to new visitors and offer more to you than this site will allow.
Q: What’s wrong with your current site?
A: Nothing! But there are some things I want to have more static; things I want you to be able to find without a lot of trouble. For example: instead of having my bookshelf in the tiny margin to the left, I can have a whole page devoted to what I am currently reading and offer reviews I’ve recently finished. I can also have a whole page devoted accomplishments God has granted me through my writing and a page to give more background on me personally. With the new site, I can do all this without interrupting my regular blog posts. This blog is staying the same! It’s just getting a different look and will be connected to the other site. You are still encouraged to leave comments and contact me whenever. It’s just going to look a little different.
So, let me know what you think of the new design! And if you have any other questions, leave them in the comments as well. Thanks!
CCBR nominated for a Litty Award!
Book Chronicle has chosen 35 blogs as nominees for this year’s Litty Awards. Christian Children’s Book Review (for which I write several reviews a month) is on the list! You can vote by visiting their site. You’ll find us listed at #9. As a bonus: you’ll be introduced to a number of other book-loving sites.
Speaking of CCBR, you know I for that site, but did you know … a few of my reviews have also been published in Epic Inspiration. You’ll see three, one each for January through March of this year.
What am I reading?
A number have inquired about my reading list. If you’ve been on my other site, you know I’ve set a goal of reading at least forty books in 2007. Considering the pace at which I read, this may be an unsurmountable goal, but I’ve set it nonetheless. Oh, and I’m not counting all the children’s books I read. That would be a little like cheating, I think … If you want to know more about the kids’ books I love, visit Christian Children’s Book Review. I contribute there a couple times a week.
Anyway, I’ve added my reading list and links to the books in the left sidebar under my profile. If you roll your cursor over the titles you’ll get a pop-up window giving you a little more info. Follow the link to read even more. Titles will disappear as I finish those books and new titles will be added as I begin them.
If you’ve read any on my list or have some suggestions, I’d love to hear it! I love talking about books. I’m usually going through about ten books at a time. Short attention span and an inability to prioritize all the things I want to read, I guess. My list always includes books on writing, parenting and spiritual growth. I can also get into a good novel. There’s nothing like good historical fiction! Any good book can quickly have me neglecting the dishes and laundry … unfortunately, sometimes even the kids.
Blogroll
You may have noticed a few new items in the sidebar this week. I’ve been adding to my blogroll. This is great for you because it puts you in touch with a bunch more people! Just like with the Lindenville Cafe, you can click through to the next blog or select a few favorites that interest you. All three new additions are filled with women bloggers just like me. Take the time to check out: Christian Women Online (over 900 sites), FaithLifts (a collection of encouraging Christian blogs), and Blogging Chicks (over 500 sites). Now, I cannot vouch for every writer listed — some may hold very different philosophies on life and religion — but there are many, many great sites among them! I encourage you to check them out.
