22 Reasons to be Thankful

All month Facebook and Twitter have been packed with people showing gratitude. Every day since November began, they have faithfully posted one item for which they are thankful. I am not one of those faithful people, but I am exceedingly thankful. Here are twenty-two reasons why.

  1. I am thankful for bacon. :)
  2. I am thankful our God heals. Just one year ago we attended our last PT sessions with Zach. It simultaneously seems like forever ago and yet yesterday! God healed my son’s leg and not only restored full mobility and health, but has given us a constant reminder of His power and exceptional goodness to us.
  3. I am thankful for full calendars and abundant experiences. Too often we complain of busyness. You know me; I’m all about intentional living and that usually means rest, peace and priorities. Sometimes, however, purposeful living leads to full calendars. This year we’ve taken not one, but THREE family vacations, celebrated two weddings, attended three bridal showers, two baby showers and countless birthday parties. The kids enjoyed their first time outside the country (Canada) and I relished my first time to the West Coast (San Diego). We fill our summer with baseball, softball, swim lessons, VBS and dance camp. I’ve been able to write and teach Bible studies on 1 and 2 Samuel, idolatry, and God’s immeasurable love. Groups invited me to speak on these topics as well as writing and my personal testimony … When listed like this, it sounds crazy, but it’s been fantastic! God is so good to afford us so many amazing opportunities and experiences.
  4. I am thankful that our security is not found in what we possess. In the wake of Sandy, I cannot cease praising God for the security HE provides. It is not conditional on where we live, the state or size of our homes, the presence of electricity or school or all sorts of other things we claim are necessities. If we have Him, we have more than we need.
  5. I am thankful for insurance. We’re still waiting for all the details to be sorted and repairs to be made, but we are blessed. Far more blessed than we deserve.
  6. I am thankful for struggles. Too often people believe God is only good if our lives are easy and comfortable, but without the difficult times, without the uncomfortable experiences, we would never truly realize how good He is and how good we have it because of Him.
  7. I am thankful struggles don’t last forever. Whatever comes is always sure to pass.
  8. I am thankful for coffee and …
  9. … a husband who not only spoils me with unexpected Starbucks treats, but who takes advantage of buy one-get one free offers and brings home TWO coffees … both for me.
  10. I am thankful for love notes from my children.
  11. I am thankful to be a stay-at-home mom. The current economy and the cost of living in our area make our situation a rarity. Sacrifices are made, to be sure, but I am exceedingly grateful that we are able to make those sacrifices so that I can primarily be a homemaker. Any work I can do from home offers pure gravy.
  12. I am thankful for community created by public schools. I still have days when I ache to be back in the private, Christian school where my children started their education, but if we were there, we would not have the opportunities granted us here. Nothing could substitute for these relationships and situations in which we can be salt and light. It’s absolutely priceless. Note: I didn’t say it is EASY, but it is worth it.
  13. I am thankful for our church. We belong to an amazing group of people who love beyond boundaries, who seek to live like Christ, who forgive and welcome and worship. It’s a beautiful thing.
  14. I am thankful that our church extends beyond OUR church. I can feel just at home at my brother’s church in PA, my mom’s church in Indiana and our old church in New York. The church is not about one denomination, one town, one group of people. It’s worldwide. Being part of that is just stinkin’ awesome.
  15. I am thankful that God holds the future and I know He loves me. My husband works for an investment bank. I work on the fringe of publishing. Both of those industries seem ever-rapidly changing. We are guaranteed nothing … except that God is sovereign and He will never leave us nor forsake us.
  16. I am thankful for extended family. Yes, they’re crazy at times and all dysfunctional in their own quirky ways, but I love them all and can’t imagine my life without them.
  17. I am thankful for stupid tv. Everyone needs a brainless escape once in a while. For us, it’s witty sitcoms, which we affectionately dub “stupid tv.”
  18. I am thankful we serve a God who not only hears and cares, but who answers prayer. Barren women have babies, sick people grow healthy, broken people are healed, the hungry are fed, those who mourn are comforted … all of these are prayers answered just this year! I know them. I’ve seen them. I’ve hugged them. I’ve rejoiced with them when God answers our prayers.
  19. I am thankful for friends who pray for and with me.
  20. I am thankful for friends who live in my computer (states or countries away) yet seem closer than others who live on my block.
  21. I am thankful for each every person who follows me online. Every subscription, note, “like”, share and comment encourage me to keep writing, keep studying, keep pursuing God and publication for HIS glory. THANK YOU.
  22. I am thankful my mother-in-law is cooking the turkey. :)
