THAT’s what a bug cake is!

Ellie chose a Winnie the Pooh theme for her birthday this year. It took everything in me not to rush out to my favorite store and buy their really, super cool cake pan that looks like a bee hive. They even sell little candy bumble bees to adorn the sweet thing.

My husband, who is convinced that I compulsively buy every kitchen gadget known to man, especially the ones that take up a ton of space and are only used once a year, has encouraged me to seek versatility in my purchases. His voice in the back of my head convinced me that, while absolutely precious, a beehive cakepan would probably never, ever leave my basement after this one birthday party. But at forty bucks a pop and a basement already full of way too many cake pans (I have an addiction.), I couldn’t justify the cost. (Oh, but it would have been SO PERFECT!!)

Here is what I made instead.

So, all you tweeters and facebook buds who scratched your heads at my status updates over the weekend, you now have your answer. By the way, they tasted just as good as they look. Even the little crazy-eyed ones.

  1. They are so sweet!

And does you husband cook? I only ask because my husband doesn’t. Ever. And he would no sooner encourage me to seek versatility in kitchen gadget purchases than he would know where the juice pitchers are kept…

Seriously, last week he asked where I kept the pitchers when he wanted to make juice…and we’ve lived here nearly 18 months.

I am a bit of a kitchen gadget girl…but we were talking about your cakes weren’t we? They are beautiful!

    • My husband is a 7-digit chef. If I don’t cook, he orders take-out. :)

I’m a total gadget girl. It borders on the edge of sickness; I’m that bad.

  2. We have lived in our house for 13 years and have kept things in the same place for just as long – yet when my husband unloads the dishwasher I have to hunt for the things I need as he puts them in different creative places!

The cakes are cute! Did you use a cookie cutter or a bug cake pan to make the shapes?

    • Are you sure he’s not doing it on purpose? I could see Andy sending you on scavenger hunts. :)

I used a cake pan. I have a whole collection of them. One makes individual train cars, another trucks and cars, one does acorns. Like I said, it’s an addiction.

  3. Those are awesome!!!

I have a Winnie-the-Pooh cake pan that my mom bought when my brother was a baby. He’s 35 now. I’ve made so many Winnie the Pooh cakes that it’s not even funny. I love yours because they’re something different and yet oh-so girlie!

    Great job!

  4. Look at your decorating self! Makes me want to pull out the Williams and Sonoma easter egg pans I JUST HAD TO HAVE 10 years ago and haven’t ever used.

  5. so cute – and I bet they were scrumptious!

  6. I had the same impulse when my daughter wanted a Winnie the Pooh birthday party, too. That cake pan is the buzz! But these sure turned out cute. Did you have to buy a cake pan for them? :)

  7. Oh, how cute! My son’s birthday is April 7th. Wanna come to TX and make a cake for me? LOL

    Great job!

Enjoy your blog. It’s fun, bright, and inspiring. Keep up the good work!
