Rug Decisions
This post is mostly for my mom who lives several hours away and can’t drop by my house to see exactly what I’ve been trying to explain to her for the last two days. Also, since Kellie posted about decorating decisions not too long ago, it must just be the cool thing to do right now. And I really want to be cool, so here goes.
We’re in the process of redecorating our living. Actually, we’re re-doing our kitchen, too, but today is about the living room. Specifically the rug. A friend took me to a glorious shop where I found a rug I adore. After some back and forth and a final granted permission of “I trust you; you can do whatever you like,” I ordered this puppy online for a third of the price storefront. It was a bit of a headache, but worth the money saved. Anyway, the sample rug (from the store) looked like this:

The rug I bought looks like this.

It’s obviously the same pattern (though larger to fit the room), but the colors are different. And I really like the colors the way they were.
Mine has yellow where the pale blue should be, grey where the cream should be, and orange where the yellow should be.
The first one felt folksy and Celtic. The second one feels more Native American.
So here’s my question for all of you: How big of a deal is this? Did I order the wrong rug? Should I send it back? Or am I making a big deal out of nothing. I really, really liked the pale blue and now I don’t have it anywhere.
Suggestions, please!

Hey Tanya! Not that I am any kind of decorating expert (AT ALL!) but, for what it’s worth, I really like the first rug better. Like you said, it’s kinda subtle differences, but it does give it a totally different look. That’s my 2 cents
My thoughts are that if you don’t LOVE it then send it back. I’m sure that even with the discount it was a hefty purchase and you every time you look at it you are going to be thinking about the original and how much you liked it. : )
Here’s the problem though: I can’t buy the original one from the store because it exceeds our budget. The only way I could get the rug at all is because I found it so much cheaper online. So how do I keep this price, but get the other colors?
Also, we’re planning to replace the furniture (now a stone color, you can kind of see the corner of the couch in the second picture) with dark leather pieces. Once we get those, the rug might look different too.
I feel ridiculously petty spending so much time thinking about this when there are thousands of people starving around the world!! But we are in suburbia and we budgeted for this, so I’ll pray for them while I continue to ponder this.
perhaps it’s cheaper cause it’s the different color combination. when you compare the two to each other, I see your point. but, unless you really don’t like it (w/o comparing it color to color) – I’d suggest keeping it. Otherwise, you may need to go back to square 1 and start all over again – which I think would be more frustrating. until you pointed out the color differences, I didn’t notice they were different. but, i’mnot a decorating guru so ignore my advice! i’m just lucky if I can even SEE my rug on a given day underneath all the toys and shoes and stuff!
Well, Hon, I really do like the blue much better than the yellow – why? It doesn’t ‘take over’ like the yellow does. In the blue, the center seems to ‘get along with the other colors’ , while the yellow in the other rug ‘demands to be the center of attention”. I don’t think it even ‘allows’ the other colors much of a chance to be seen. (Wow, I am so creative in my opinions/speech today aren’t I? HAHAHA) ANYWAY, I honestly don’t think even the leather furniture could quiet that yellow. You’re right – the blue has a more folksy look – - – the yellow???? Yeah, more native American. Hmmmmm, return it or settle for it? My vote is to send it back. Love you
I must be blind. They don’t look that different to me. Maybe though, so you’ll be happy, forget them both and keep looking…???
I think that if you’re not really happy with it then you should send it back. You are going to have to live with it and the things you don’t like about it everyday if not and I think that would get very old pretty quickly.
If you really really liked the other one, don’t settle.
Said the woman who didn’t open her mouth when she should have and now regrets the decision on a much larger scale.
OK, they’re totally different, color-wise. I’m sure your “good friend” who took you to the “really nice, yet expensive store” would agree with me… I’ve been shopping with her enough to make an educated guess! If I were you, I’d call back the place where you got it from, tell them what the problem is and see if they have what you want, i.e. correct colors in correct places. You may even be able to email them the pictures of both rugs. Get what you want… If they can’t get it, return it and look for the correct rug other places. By the way, I LOVE the first rug!!
I don’t know how to fix it, but I agree with the others who said that they are not the same and don’t settle for the rug that’s not really what you want. I completely agree with you about the blue being more Celtic and the yellow one being more Native American.
